Building History

Timberline High School's building opened in 1970, originally designed as an open-concept school. Instead of classrooms, the school was divided into "pods" and students attended classes according to modular scheduling of large classes in lecture halls and small group classes in open areas. Each day included unscheduled time for self-directed learning.

A more traditional, classroom-based model evolved as teachers began to create their own makeshift classrooms in the open areas using bookcases, cabinets, and any other materials on hand and the schedule was changed to six daily class periods.

In 2006, a full campus modernization began, with a new main building constructed a few hundred yards from what is now the student parking lot. The gyms, pool, theatre, fine arts classrooms, and auto shop areas were also remodeled. The 197,000 square food building consists of three floors of 81 instructional space, plus portable classrooms, and is organized around a large commons, library, administrative offices, and cafeteria.
